Chair’s Message

Established in 1945, the department of mechanical engineering in IISc is one of the most visible and highly ranked mechanical engineering programmes in the country. Its faculty and alumni are also known globally for their rigour, creativity, and high intellectual standards.

Right from the inception, the department has focused on research in traditional and emerging areas as is evident from publications in discerning journals, projects funded by extramural grants, and research outreach that has had impact on the industry and society.

As one of the first institutions in India to begin post-graduate education in mechanical engineering, the department is known for the high quality of its courses that compare with best of their kind anywhere in the world. Consequently, alumni of the department have done exceedingly well in their careers. Many occupy key positions in the industry and are leaders in government research organizations and academia. While PhD and MTech (Research) programmes form the core of the department, it also prides itself for the highly sought-after MTech programme. The department also has numerous project staff who are supported by sponsored grants.

It is a matter of pride for the department that it has been interacting with the strategic sector in India, with the industry, and government organizations for many decades. The department is responding to the changing needs of the society. The department is striving to engage with the industry in meaningful ways while not losing focus on the primary mandate of basic research in the broad area of mechanical engineering.

The breadth of research expertise in the Department is evident from the fact that its faculty have  made significant contributions in IISc in setting many departments and centres while also providing leadership in the country and in the world, though professional service.

In terms of research areas, the department has been engaged in manipulating and controlling fluids, heat, solids, and sound. It has many thriving laboratories, state-of-the-art facilities, energetic research workforce, and enthusiastic administrative staff.

In the coming years, the department aims to grow in terms of number of faculty, modernized infrastructure, new collective research initiatives, and most importantly, engaging with the industry and alumni.
