Compliant mechanism collection

M2D2 Lab, Indian Institute of Science (IISc)

Model No. 3

This is a variant of a crimping mechanism, one of the first compliant mechanisms that were systematically studied. By pressing on the handles on the right to bring them together, we reduce the gap between two vertical ends on the left. An object placed in the gap gets crimped. This mechanism is designed to have high mechanical advantage. It was used to create a hand-held tool to measure the breaking force of cemented sand specimens.
