This is a contact-aided compliant mechanism designed by Nilesh Mankame in his doctoral thesis at the University of Pennsylvania. It shows that non-smooth output path is possible with smooth input. When the notch on the right side is pressed down continuously, the top-extension on the right moves  down and then moves up when the gap at the bottom is closed.
