Points: 20

  1. 5 points
In the problem of the design of he stiffest axially loaded bar for a given volume of material, interchange the objective function and the global constraint. That is, minimize volume for a specified value of mean compliance. Show that the one we solved in the class is equivalent to this one by writing down the equations that will enable you to solve.
  2. 15 points
Solve the stiffest bar under axial load for any assumed p(x). We solved for the case of p(x) = p0 in the class. Use Maple if you wish. Assume reasonable numerical values. Plot p(x), A(x), u(x), u'(x), and the Lagrange multipliers. Complete solution is needed.
