Homework #8
Assigned: Oct. 20th, 2005
Due: Nov. 3rd, 2005
Points: 20

  1. 10 points
Solve the bar optimization problem (homework #7, problem #2) with sinusoidal loads numerically after discretization. Approximate the derivatives using the finite difference method. Use "fmincon" in Matlab to solve the optimization problem in finite number of variables.
  2. 10 points
Use the above numerical technique to solve the problem of a fixed-fixed beam with constant transverse load across the span of the beam for maximum stiffness with lower and upper bounds on the area of cross-section for a given amount of material. Again, use "fmioncon" and finite-difference derivatives for the discretized equations.
