Look up Homework #1 of 2010 offering of this course and the solution posted there to know what is meant by "beyond instructor's expectation".

  1. 20 points
Propose an original (i.e., of your own) problem of calculus of variations. Clearly indicate the variables, objective function, and constraints (if any), and all the relevant data.
  2. 20 points
Discretize the problem you proposed and find the solution using fmincon (or other) routine in Matlab (or some other software). Give details of your solution and show that your solution satisfies the KKT necessary conditions.
