Due: Jan. 14th, 2015
Points: 50
Additional points for work that is beyond instructor's expectation!
Look up Homework #1 of 2010 offering of this course and the solution posted there to know what is meant by "beyond instructor's expectation".

  1. 20 points
    Consider the optimization problem:
Solve it graphically (2D plot), analytically (KKT conditions), and numerically (using fmincon in Matlab). Verify the sufficiency of your solution.
  2. 10 points
Is there a solution if you change n = 2? If so, show that solution graphically; if not, argue why not.
  3. 20 points
If you are allowed to change d, D, and n, can you find a data set that has a minimum for the aforementioned problem but the minimum does not satisfy "constraint qualification" condition? Provide enough details to support your answer.
