Due: Feb. 16th, 2016
Points: 50
Additional points for work that is beyond instructor's expectation!
Look up Homework #1 of 2010 offering of this course and the solution posted there to know what is meant by "beyond instructor's expectation".

  1. 20 points
Pose and solve the catenoid problem (i.e., minimizing the surface of revolution of a curve passing between two given points about the x-axis). Use the data of problem 2 in Homework #3 .
  2. 30 points
Using what we called the "Euler's method of deriving Euler-Lagrange Equations", derive the equations and boundary conditions for a functional involving y(x), y'(x), and y''(x). Do not forget to derive the boundary conditions too.
