Additional points for work that is beyond instructor's expectation!
Look up Homework #1 of 2010 offering of this course and the solution posted there to know what is meant by "beyond instructor's expectation".

  1. Points: 50
Take any one problem from "More than a dozen problems in axially loaded bar and solve it completely by writing down the necessary conditions, boundary conditions, and simplifying the problem to the extent possible. Make sure that all of you solve different problems.
Do not choose Problem 1 and Problem 8. They will be solved in the class.
  2. Points: 20
Please submit a one-page proposal on your idea for the course project. You are expected to describe the problem you want to solve. You should work alone on the project.
Your one-page description should include a clear mathematical statement of the problem with objective function, constraints, design variables, state variables, and data. If you do not have the mathematical expressions at this time, simply write it verbally.
Provide a one-paragraph of background to the problem.
Write one line about the best design you would hope for.
